Hey AI enthusiast,

Welcome to the latest edition of the One More Thing in AI newsletter.

We look at Open AI’s Operator and why it is significant! Plus 5 real-life uses of AI agents.

Best regards,

Renjit

In this edition:

Operator: The AI Assistant that promises to change how we work and live

Imagine having an assistant that can grocery shop, file expense reports, and even make restaurant reservations—all while you focus on more important tasks. OpenAI’s latest release, Operator, promises to deliver just that.

What Is this “Operator”, anyway?

Operator is OpenAI’s latest AI agent that acts on your behalf to automate everyday tasks. It doesn’t just read or write like ChatGPT—it can browse, scroll, click, and type, making it a step closer to mimicking human behavior online. Whether it’s booking a table, moving corporate data, or streamlining work tasks, Operator aims to save time for both individuals and businesses.

Currently available in a “research preview” for ChatGPT Pro users at $200 per month, Operator showcases OpenAI’s cautious but ambitious approach. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap describes it as a “fundamental shift in how people interact with computers.”

Key Features of Operator

Automated Assistance: It handles routine tasks like buying groceries or filing expenses.

Browser Capability: Operates just like a human online, clicking buttons and navigating menus.

Control & Safety: Includes a “takeover mode” for sensitive tasks like payments or logins. Users must approve high-stakes actions.

Operator uses OpenAI’s new Computer-Using Agent (CUA) model, combining advanced reasoning with image recognition. This makes it adept at navigating web interfaces seamlessly. You might want to check out the edition, where I wrote aboutAI Agents in Dec last year.

Why Now?

The release of Operator reflects a growing trend. Companies like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Google have launched similar AI tools. But OpenAI has an edge—its user base includes 300 million weekly active users and a million paying business customers. Staggering, right?

Collaborations with brands like Instacart, Uber, and Etsy further highlight the potential. Instacart, for example, isn’t building its own AI agent but sees Operator as a way to enhance its services without reinventing the wheel.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its potential, widespread adoption of AI agents faces hurdles:

Usability: Many users are still skeptical about relying on AI for daily tasks.

Privacy & Security: Misuse, like phishing attempts or malicious prompts, is a concern. Operator mitigates this by keeping users in control and avoiding sensitive actions like banking.

The Takeaway:

OpenAI’s Operator isn’t just another AI tool: While still evolving, its potential to transform personal productivity and business. For founders and business leaders, Operator represents an opportunity to streamline back-end operations.

The question isn’t whether AI agents like Operator will become mainstream—it’s how fast they’ll get there and how prepared we’ll be to leverage their capabilities.

Why Companies Are Hiring AI Workers: 5 Real-Life Examples That Will Surprise You!

What if your employees had AI-powered teammates to handle complex tasks, from drug discovery to customer service? Early adopters are already exploring this future.

The Rise of AI Agents

AI agents are more than chatbots. They can perform tasks autonomously, such as screening sales leads or managing marketing campaigns. Companies like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Workday have integrated these agents to reduce workloads and increase efficiency.

But these tools come with both potential and risks. Gartner predicts AI agents will make 15% of business decisions by 2028, but 25% of cybersecurity breaches could also stem from their misuse.

How Companies Are Using AI Agents

Here are five businesses pushing the boundaries with AI agents:

🔹 Johnson & Johnson: Accelerating Drug Discovery

J&J uses AI agents to optimize the chemical synthesis process in drug development. The agents determine the ideal time to switch solvents, speeding up experiments that once required multiple manual iterations. Scientists monitor the agents to prevent errors like biased outputs or “hallucinations.”

🔸 Moody’s: Financial Analysis with Diverse Opinions

Moody’s employs 35 AI agents to tackle tasks like analyzing financial reports. These agents, working together in a “multi-agent system,” often reach different conclusions, providing varied perspectives on complex topics such as geopolitical risks.

🔹 eBay: Writing Code and Selling Smarter

eBay developed an agent framework to handle tasks like coding and creating marketing content. This system uses multiple AI models to generate code snippets and will eventually write code autonomously. It also personalizes its output based on employee preferences.

🔸 Deutsche Telekom: Employee Assistant

Deutsche Telekom’s “askT” agent answers employee questions about policies, benefits, and even performs tasks like submitting vacation requests. Around 10,000 employees rely on it weekly.

🔹 Cosentino: Digital Workers for Customer Service

Cosentino employs AI agents as “digital workers” in customer service. These agents replaced 3-4 employees previously responsible for clearing customer orders, allowing the human staff to focus on higher-value tasks.

The Takeaway:

AI agents are transforming how businesses operate by automating routine and complex tasks. They promise efficiency and cost savings but require careful oversight to avoid errors or misuse.
